The 2018 NBA Draft

Every year fans of a majority of the teams in the NBA go into the season already thinking about the draft.  They already know which day the lottery takes place and have begun discussing plans for draft night, clearly I’m speaking from experience.  Hell, some may even have watched so much college basketball, that they spent every free second they had at work playing ESPN’s draft lottery machine (I love that game by the way).  What seemed like an eternity away in October is finally here.  Your favorite franchise which is being led by a person you’ve most likely never met but somehow seem to trust, now has the chance to right their wrongs.

Deandre Ayton, Mo Bamba and Marvin Bagley III are all expected to make huge impacts in the NBA.

The 2018 NBA Draft appears to be full of talent. Guys like Deandre AytonMohamed Bamba, and Marvin Bagley III all appear to be premium talent. They check all the boxes and have potential through the roof (did I sound like an expert there ?), and as well know the ceiling is the roof! But I have around 2-3 guys in this draft that I really like.

At 6’11 with a pretty good looking jump shot Porter Jr. can develop into a pretty good NBA player. His prior injuries are a concern for teams so let’s see what team will take the risk. Photo apnews.com

The first is Michael Porter Jr. (F. Missouri).  Now I’ll be the first to admit that part of the reason I love Porter Jr. is because of the hype he came into college with.  After all it’s not like we got to see him play much in college, so most of my excitement is based off my imagination (thank the lord I was born prior to social media and still have one to use). But what’s not to love? He is 6-11 with a stroke! And in today’s NBA their aren’t many more positions more valuable than a stretch forward.  I understand that his back is a concern,  but assuming he checks out Porter Jr. has star written all over him.

Gary Trent Jr. could be a steal for a team looking for a shooter.  He shot a remarkable 40% from 3 point range and 88% from the free throw line.  Those numbers stick out to NBA scouts.  Photo Duke Athletics

The next guy is Gary Trent Jr. (G. Duke). To me it’s kind of odd how Trent’s not receiving as much pub as I feel he deserves. Sure he is slightly limited and he needs to get stronger.  Fortunately for him teams LOVE a shooter.  And if their is one thing Trent can do it’s shoot the J.  His streakiness does not scare me too much, he shot 40% from the arc and 88% from the line.  With numbers like that, Trent is worth the risk for a team that has a solid foundation already.

Donte DiVincenzo Is one of those guys who will give everything to help a team. A proven winner at the collegiate level DiVincenzo aims to prove all of his doubters wrong. Photo vuhoops.com

My last guy in the draft is Donte DiVincenzo (G. Villanova).  DiVincenzo’s went from being a guy that “may” enter the draft to a potential steal at the end of the first round.  Now this may sound a little hipocritical coming off my comments about Trent, but  DiVincenzo’s shooting is a little too shaky for me RIGHT NOW! But the stones he showed on the national stage during the tournament makes me believe he will have no problem making the transition. He is tough, quick, can play defense and is athletic. His ability to score mixed with his heart would be all I needed to take a chance on him at the end of the first.

To have an opportunity to walk across that stage and shake Adam Silver’s hand as a new member of the NBA is a blessing. We salute all those taking the leap of faith and living their dreams. Photo brightsideofthesun.com

Now we all understand there isn’t an exact science to selecting in the NBA Draft.  If there was, Kevin Durant would have been selected first and the Pistons would have selected Carmelo or Wade with the second pick.   But the fun part is after you tell everyone what should happen on draft night getting to watch things unfold and pray I am right. Otherwise my DM’s and mentions will be on a bean.
