Mic Larry: The Humble One

Bred from the NYC Streetball culture there is one role that I feel doesn’t get enough credit, and that’s the announcer or MC.  If you’ve been around the NYC Streetball scene this summer then there’s no way you don’t know who Mic Larry is.  Bronx, NY native Larry Agee is known to the basketball world as Mic Larry, and it almost seems as if he has an alter ego when he’s calling a game.  He has flawlessly taken his passion for basketball and enthusiasm for entertaining a crowd to the next level and leaves no person regretting their decision of coming out to watch a game.  A lot of people think that simply picking up a mic and giving the play by play is all that goes into the job.  It’s a much more daunting task than expected and takes hours of preparation and laser focus.  Mic Larry has his own style and adds a certain flair to his craft that can turn a boring game into something people enjoyable and funny.

The past year or so has been all work for Mic Larry!  He’s ramped up his visibility in a major way and has worked some major events including the Frankie Williams Classic, the Nike NY vs NY tournament, The Primetime Basketball League in Los Angeles with NBA great Byron Scott and Streetball Madness halfway around the globe in Melbourne, Australia.  We got a chance to sit down with Mic Larry and got a glimpse into his world.  Like any professional, Agee tirelessly works at getting better every time he gets hired for an event.  It’s not everyday that an announcer is invited to host an event in Australia, so when he got that call he made the made sure he made the most of his opportunity.

It’s a well known fact that Rome wasn’t built in a day and Mic Larry knows this and builds his brand day by day.  He started his journey very humbly, with most of his gigs coming in the shape of weddings, baby showers and church functions.  His love for the game of basketball drove him to connect with Mousey, the legendary coach and commissioner of the TriState Basketball Classic  in Harlem, NY.  Little did Mic Larry know that this connection he made would lead him to where he is today in his announcer career.  Many people don’t know this but he actually started announcing at  Tristate.  It was there where he would build his confidence and realize that he had a future entertaining crowds at basketball venues. Since getting his start calling games at TriState, Mic Larry took his craft seriously and has organically made a name for himself on a global scale.

One day he garnered attention from none other than the late Greg Marius, and the rest is history.  Marius was the long time commissioner of the Entertainers Basketball Classic at the world famous Rucker Park.  He had taken a liking to Mic Larry and invited him to the park for a trial run with the High School division.  He has since become the voice of Rucker Park which has been rebranded and now is known as Entertainers 155.  Rucker Park has been in somewhat of a decline in recent years but Agee and Mousey vow a rebirth of the tournament on the iconic courts On 155th Street in Harlem.  Since Marius passed away in April of 2017 Mic Larry has intensified his focus and dedicated his work at Rucker Park to Marius’ memory.

I’ve personally been at games where the crowd grew restless when Mic Larry wasn’t the announcer.  It’s that kind of love from the people that drives him to do better.  Since meeting Mic Larry he’s always been a humble guy who takes networking to another level.  He’s the guy who will be at the gym an hour before even the players show up.  He’s always willing to learn and finds different ways to entertain the crowd.  It’s this kind of drive that will take him far in life. We got a chance to sit down with him and ask a few questions.  Click on the video below to check it out!  We salute Mic Larry for all that he’s done for the culture and sincerely want to see him win.  ?
