Bucketfam: A Global Takeover
If you have been paying close attention to the NYC basketball scene then you’ve heard the name Bucketfam before. The group originated in Brooklyn, NY and has touched every borough including the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens (and beyond). They are the newest phenomenon to hit the scene and are aiming at global domination. Founders Shawn “King” Doyle and Anthony “Romie” Marshall established the brand in 2015 in order to create family and culture throughout communities around the world. Their work isn’t limited to solely basketball either. The group helps the youth with a multitude of issues plaguing our black and brown communities, like peer pressure, staying away from drugs and gangs, and staying in school. A “Bucket” is used metaphorically within this family and can mean anything positive. A good grade is a bucket. A beautiful woman is a bucket… you get the point! It’s about promoting positive energy and giving future leaders the platform to exhibit their natural abilities.
Bucketfam is affiliated with athletes at all levels from Middle School to the NBA. Pros and former pros help mentor youth to aim them into the right direction. Names like Omar Cook, Taj Gibson (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Epiphany Prince (NY Liberty) to name a few, are some of the people within reach for Bucketfam. Also, Streetball legend Ed “Booger” Smith, formerly of the cult classic basketball documentary Soul in the Hole, has been heavily involved with Bucketfam and tells his story as a cautionary tale and aims the youth in the opposite direction than he took growing up. Within this family it’s about mentorship and helping the next generation. Doyle explains “ when we were growing up we didn’t have any outlets. We didn’t have the blueprint or anybody to show us they way… we now possess those blueprints for the next generation and plan to help as many young people as possible”.
Bucketfam has huge plans to expand their presence throughout the country and even abroad. Former Ohio State guard Brian Brown, who starred at Brooklyn’s Bishop Loughlin, is affiliated with the Bucketfam collective and has has created a subdivision of the group called Bucketfam Midwest. The group has gone Global with affiliations in The Dominican Republic, Ukraine and Serbia (and several other countries), and look to make positive contributions to youth everywhere! It’s deeper than just basketball with Bucketfam. It’s about every individual reinventing themselves to make the community a better place for everybody. Having good grades and education in general are paramount in the mission of Bucketfam and will continue to be the driving force behind the movement.
When we were growing up we didn’t have any outlets. We didn’t have the blueprint or anybody to show us they way… we now possess those blueprints for the next generation and plan to help as many young people as possible.
-Shawn “King” Doyle
There is a strong affiliation with a number of reputable schools and basketball programs in and around the city for Bucketfam. They have a strong alliance with Lincoln Park, Metro BDA, Our Savior Lutheran, and the NY Lightning AAU club to name a few. These alliances have allowed them to keep strong ties with players such as Dayshawn Davis, Anthony Marshall and Posh Alexander. All three guys are loyal Bucketfam members and take that stamp with them everywhere they play. Davis, of Our Savior Lutheran is a player who’s gritty style of play has led him to become one of the best players in New York City. Alexander, like Davis, is also one of the best in the city and who’s stock has been soaring after absolutely destroying everything in his way at games on the Nike circuit. He can simply jump out of the gym and is a walking bucket (pun intended). Marshall, the youngster of the group is the show stopper. He draws a crowd anywhere he goes and doesn’t disappoint. He can handle and score with ease and it’s going to be fun to watch his developement. Only in 10th grade, Marshall attends BDA, the school where the Bucketfam founder Shawn Doyle coaches.
I look forward to seeing where Doyle and gang can take the Bucketfam brand. With links to the NBA and even professional leagues overseas look for the brand to tighten their grip on the game on a global scale. Sky is the limit for the brand and soon everybody is going to be wearing a Bucketfam t shirt… cause after all, everybody wants to score buckets!! Salute ?.
