Brooklyn Built: Deron Rippey Jr. Takes NYC Hoops to Duke

Deron Rippey Jr. is the latest example of New York City basketball at its finest. Raised in Brooklyn, NYC, his game was built in tough gyms, real competition, and a culture where respect is earned. That NYC edge has followed him everywhere he’s played.

After coming up through New Heights NYC on the AAU circuit, Rippey Jr. took his talents to Blair Academy (NJ), one of the top prep programs in the country. There, he didn’t just compete — he dominated. His play earned him New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year, cementing his status as one of the best guards in the nation.

Rippey Jr. is a high-flying, athletic guard with bounce, speed, and confidence. He can score, create, and put pressure on defenses in a flash. That explosiveness, paired with his feel for the game, has many calling him the best guard recruit since Kyrie Irving — high praise, especially considering Kyrie’s own legendary Duke roots.

Basketball is also in his blood. His father was a hooper back in his day, and that generational knowledge shows in how Deron controls pace and handles big moments. Now, he’s bringing all of that to the next level after committing to play college basketball at Duke University.

As he heads to Durham, one thing is clear: Deron Rippey Jr. isn’t just representing himself. He’s carrying Brooklyn, NYC, and its basketball legacy with him. And no matter how bright the stage gets, that New York edge will always be part of his game. He’s got a great support system and sky’s the limit for this Brooklyn kid.
