#22 St. John’s improves to 4-0

This past Sunday, November 17th, the Red Storm made their ‘24-’25 season debut at Madison Square Garden with a victory over New Mexico. Including their exhibition games, the Johnnie’s have been playing great basketball to start off the season.

St. John’s came out the gate strong in the first half by shooting over 50% from the field with a mix of mid range jumpers and successful drives to the basket. Deivon Smith, and Kadary Richmond helped the Red Storm build an early lead over the Lobos of New Mexico. As the first half went on, the Red Storm’s, RJ Luis Jr., racked up rebounds and assists, playing a major role in St. John’s 11 point lead going into the half.

During the second half, New Mexico began to make a comeback from their 11 point deficit. The Lobos shot over 60% from beyond the arc and played great defense. The Red Storm kept fighting to maintain their lead. Midway through the second half is where forward, RJ Luis Jr., began to shine. The junior forward scored 14 of his 21 points, and grabbed 7 rebounds. With his stellar play, the Red Storm’s lead increased and they walked away with a 14 point victory.

St. John’s has a tough road trip ahead of them in the Bahamas for the Baha Mar Hoops Championship. Opponents will include the Baylor Bears, Georgia Bulldogs, and the Harvard Crimson.
